Our latest profile comes from Hirend Charan, a Train Guard based at Leppington.

When did you join Sydney Trains?

I started in 1996 as a CSA working at Stanmore. After a couple of years, I decided to become a Guard and have worked out of Liverpool and Leppington ever since.

Tell us a bit about your role…

It’s a job where no two days are the same. I get to interact with a huge cross section of society and assist them in reaching their destinations.

How would your colleagues describe you?

As a pretty happy-go-lucky guy I would think. I’ve been told that I come across as relatively easy-going.

What does it take to avert disaster?

Don’t miss the unique insights on the topic from Captain David Evans, one of the co-pilots of Qantas Flight 32 that had an engine and flight systems fail mid-air.

Speaking at Transport for NSW’s free Innovation Conversation later this month, Captain Evans will recount the flight and talk through steps he and his team took to land the plane safely, saving all 440 passengers and 29 crew onboard.

Finalists announced for Transport Cluster Awards

Drivers Stephanie Anglesea (Central) and Mitchell Skillcorn (Cronulla) have been named as finalists at the upcoming Transport Cluster Awards.

Nominated for her role in extinguishing a fire at Edgecliff last year, Stephanie’s quick thinking during the incident helped ensure the safety of customers and Crew.

Mitchell, who has been actively involved in the mentoring and coaching of team members, has been shortlisted in the Collaboration category of the Awards.
