Looking at Human Factors with ATP

Automatic Train Protection (ATP) recently completed a series of human factor tests to understand how drivers interact with the safety system, how proposed changes to network rules and procedures will interact with the system and the effectiveness of the proposed driver training package.

Over 800 tests were conducted in a variety of conditions on the H set prototype train. The results indicated that the system is performing as intended – with low human error and high usability observed. For a full summary of testing and results click here.

ATP is a train safety system that will be implemented across all our fleet. Electronic transponders on track (balises) will monitor train speed and protect the train from travelling over the speed limit and monitor the safe deceleration of the train as it approaches specific high risk locations. For more information about ATP visit the ATP intranet site.
