From hiking to B-grade movies, we caught up with recently-returned guard Shannon Lysien, to find out about her nine years with the railways and life outside of work.
What do you love about your job?
So many things! First off, it is really nice to be outside and feel the wind in my hair again, after spending the last two years behind a desk. I love how every day is different; the people I meet and the places I travel to. I get to see so many friends working on the trains, stations and in the yards. I really enjoy the genuine human connection I get to experience when interacting with customers; especially the children, they are so fascinated with the trains and are super adorable.
How would your colleagues describe you?
A fair few of them would describe me as family! I have quite a number of relatives working on the railway. I would guess the rest of my colleagues would describe me as cheerful, as I have earned the nickname of Smiley around the network.
After months of training, we welcomed 13 new trainee guards on Wednesday 4 July.
The class brought mixed levels of experience, half internals (CSAs, Cleaners or Transport Officers), and the other half from outside and completely new to Sydney Trains.
“I found the training to be very comprehensive: coming from outside, I had no idea whatsoever of the amount or variety of knowledge required to become a guard. The mix of theory versus practical was great, and the trainers provided much needed encouragement, assistance and motivation every step of the way,” commented Dave Myatt, recently graduated guard.
